Preparing Your Child for the Baby

The only thing better than having a child, is having two, or three, or – well, you get the point. However, your first child won’t always welcome the newcomer with open arms. So, be sure to help them prepare and be optimistic for their new best friend. Get your child excited about a new baby by including them in the planning. Give them their own “baby” to care for as well. They can feel pride in folding baby clothes or picking out a special toy for their sibling. Talk to your preschooler about the baby, with sentences such as “I can't wait till you're a great big brother/sister to the new baby,” and discuss what your preschooler might teach the new sibling. Encourage your preschooler to sing or read to the baby, or draw a few pictures for them. Your child will feel less important, so emphasizing their one-of-a-kind “role” as a “big brother/big sister” is key.
